Performance Poetry!

The year 5 children have been learning some performance poetry this week.

As a link to our Vikings History topic, the children have spent some time during their English lessons learning poetry. To be more specific, Viking poetry! As the Vikings rarely wrote anything down, it was the responsibility of the settlement's Skald (storyteller) to pass on the traditional tales and often this was poetry in the form of a song. The children spent the first of three days exploring examples of Viking poetry and will end the week by writing their own but the second day was spent learning and performing the well-known Viking sea shanty "My Mother Told Me".

Please encourage your child to sing or perform this for you, below are the lyrics and the link to which they followed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdOw6IZAS1c

My mother told me
Someday I will buy
Galley with good oars
Sail to distant shores

Stand up high on the prow
Noble barque I steer
Steady course to the haven
Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men

(repeat x3)

Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men

We hope that you enjoy the performance!
