Guided reading
At Loughton, whole-class guided reading lessons are taught at least 4 times a week. During these sessions, the children are exposed to high-quality, engaging texts that have been carefully chosen to suit their age group and topic. From ‘Peter Rabbit’ in year 3, to ‘Letters From the Lighthouse’ in year 6, the children experience a range of inspiring texts! Each session focuses on developing the children’s reading skills and the children learn these through the use of our Loughton reading characters:
Throughout their time at Loughton, the children become very familiar with each character and understand what skills are needed to be a successful reader. We aim to provide a variety of creative activities for the children in guided reading to develop their comprehension, including drama work, discussion and art. Children get frequent opportunities to practise reading aloud and staff model effective reading.
