Fire Engines and Poetry
Thursday October 3rd was an exciting day here in year 4. We celebrated National Poetry Day in our classes and also enjoyed a visit from our local fire brigade, who brought two engines with them.
We were so happy to see the sunshine yesterday so that the children could spend some time learning about the engines and the different equipment on board. The fire officers really engaged positively with the children and despite the excitement, we were very proud of the way the children listened and asked sensible questions.
We spent a few moments during the day, listening to and sharing poems with the children. HB8 listened to poet Grace Nichols, talking about her childhood and reading some of her poems about her life in Guyana. HB6 listened to Mr Taylor read his favourite poem, School Trip by Gervase Phinn and other classes enjoyed sharing poems written by the children or on different topics such as the natural world.
As part of our English work this week, all the children listened to Paul Perro's poem about Hannibal Barca, General of Carthage.
