Biomes

Do you know what subject biomes come under? Do you know what biomes are? Do you know how many there are? Could you locate them on a world map?

These are just some of the questions the children have been asked in their geography lessons over the last couple of weeks.

So far, the children have researched and found out that a biome is a large geographical area characterised by its distinct set of plants, animals and environmental conditions. Biomes may span more than one continent. The children discovered this when they had to complete a world map to show this.

We concentrated on the six main biomes – desert, tundra, deciduous forest, tiaga/boreal forest, tropical rainforest and savannah/grassland. They are going to become experts on two out of the six biomes, by researching in detail the climate of these biomes and how the plants and animals have adapted to living in the conditions of their specific environments. Their findings they will share with the class, present beautifully in their books and then go on to produce some beautiful art-works of their biomes. This is an exciting project for the children to learn about the world around them. Hopefully you can quiz your children about their understanding of this topic. You might learn something too! You never know.
